Quantity

A corrugated cardboard scratcher that doubles as somewhere to sit. The box holds five replaceable scratching pads, so when the top one is shredded you turn it over or swap in a fresh one rather than buying a whole new scratcher.

Cats scratch to stretch and to mark territory. Giving them something they are allowed to destroy tends to be cheaper than reupholstering the sofa.

What you get

  • 5 x corrugated cardboard scratching pads
  • 1 x cardboard lounge box that holds them

Specifications

  • Box: 42 x 26 x 23 cm
  • Each pad: 41 x 24.5 x 2.5 cm
  • Material: corrugated paper
  • Colour: light brown
  • Weight: approximately 1.28 kg

Who it suits

Kittens and average-sized adult cats. The box is 42 cm long, so a large breed such as a Maine Coon will overhang the ends. They can still use the pads perfectly well, they just will not curl up inside it.

Care

Vacuum the loose bits every few days. Do not wash it, and keep it out of the rain. It is cardboard, and it will not survive getting wet. When a pad is worn through, flip it over; when both sides have gone, drop in one of the spares.

Honest answers

Will it make a mess? Yes, a bit. Every cardboard scratcher sheds small flakes where the cat has been working at it. A quick vacuum sorts it out.

How long does a pad last? That depends entirely on the cat. An enthusiastic scratcher can get through one side in a few weeks; a gentler one may take months. Five pads included is the reason we chose this scratcher over a single-pad one.

Does it come with catnip? No. If you want to encourage them onto it, sprinkle your own over the pad.

Is it a bed or a scratcher? Both, in practice. Plenty of cats scratch the pad and then sit on it. It is not padded or soft, so it is not a replacement for a proper cat bed.

Safety

Corrugated paper. The manufacturer lists no coatings or chemical treatments. Cats will chew small pieces off as they scratch, which is normal, but if yours tends to swallow non-food items, supervise them and speak to your vet.
